Broom Finish Concrete Services
Broom finish concrete is the textured surface on most Indiana driveways and sidewalks, and there's a reason for that. Dragging a broom across fresh concrete leaves fine ridges that give shoes and tires something to grab, wet or dry. It's slip-resistant, easy to live with and usually the most budget-friendly of the four finishes in our decorative concrete lineup. Golden Paw Concrete pours it for homeowners and builders around Indianapolis.

What Is Brushed Concrete?
Brushed concrete and broom finish are the same thing. After the slab is placed, screeded and floated smooth, a finisher pulls a wide concrete broom across the surface while it's still workable. A soft broom leaves a fine texture. A stiffer broom cuts deeper grooves for slopes, ramps and steps. The strokes normally run across the direction people walk or drive, so the ridges work against slipping.
The details are what make it look sharp. Tooled edges give the slab a smooth, rounded border. Straight control joints, cut or tooled at the right spacing, give cracks a planned place to form. Good brooming is even from end to end, with no swirls or bald patches.
Broom Finish Concrete for Driveways, Patios and Walks
A broom finish driveway is the Indianapolis standard. It handles tires, snow shovels and spring rain without fuss, and it's the easiest surface to keep clean. See our concrete driveways page for what goes into the slab below the texture.
A broom finish patio makes sense when you'd rather put the budget into size than surface. Plenty of patios pair a broomed field with a stamped or colored border. Front walkways and sidewalks are almost always broomed, since they carry foot traffic in rain, snow and ice. Around a pool deck, a light broom texture helps wet feet, though a very coarse texture can feel rough on bare skin.
Broom Finish vs. Stamped Concrete and Other Finishes
Broom finish vs. stamped concrete is the choice most patio owners weigh first. Stamping gives you pattern and color. Broom gives you grip and a smaller bill. Here's how all four finishes compare, without prices, since those depend on your project.
| Finish | Look | Traction | Upkeep | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Broom finish | Plain gray with fine brushed lines and crisp tooled edges | High, wet or dry | Lowest: sweep, rinse, and seal if you choose | Driveways, sidewalks, steps, garage aprons |
| Stamped | A pattern pressed in to look like stone, brick, slate or wood, usually in two tones | Moderate; a glossy sealer can make it slick when wet | Highest of the four: needs resealing every few years to keep color and texture | Patios, front entries, driveway borders |
| Colored & stained | Solid or mottled earth tones in place of plain gray, smooth or textured | Matches the texture under the color | Moderate: a sealer holds the color and needs renewing now and then | Patios, walkways, borders, and paired with stamping |
| Exposed aggregate | Natural stones showing across the surface, from tan to gray to brown | High; the stone texture grips well | Low to moderate: periodic sealing keeps stones bright and tight | Driveways, pool decks, patios, walks |
Many homeowners split the difference: a broomed slab with a stamped concrete border, or a broom texture in a colored mix. Exposed aggregate is the other high-grip option, with natural stone in place of brush lines.
Care and Upkeep for a Broom Finish
Broom finish asks the least of you. Sweep it, rinse it, and clean oil spots before they soak in. Sealing isn't required the way it is on stamped or stained work. Still, as general guidance, a penetrating sealer every few years helps any outdoor slab shed water and resist freeze-thaw wear, especially a driveway.
The one thing to skip is de-icing salt, above all in the first winter. Salt pulls water into the surface. When that water freezes, the top layer can flake and scale, and the broom texture goes with it. Damage from de-icing salt isn't covered by our 3-year workmanship warranty, which covers problems caused by work done incorrectly. Sand gives traction without the harm.

Broom Finish FAQs

Why does a broom finish cost less than stamped concrete?
It's done in one step while the concrete is fresh: no mats, no color layers and no required sealer. Stamped work adds labor and materials. Our concrete cost guide explains what drives the total on any concrete job.
How long does a broom texture last on a driveway?
The ridges soften slowly as tires and shovels wear them down, but the slab underneath is the same concrete as any other finish. Keeping salt off it does more for the surface than anything else.
Does a broom finish need to be sealed?
It's optional. Many broomed slabs go years without it. A penetrating sealer adds protection against water and freeze-thaw, and our new concrete care guide covers when sealing makes sense.
Which projects suit a broom finish best?
Driveways, sidewalks, steps, garage aprons and anything on a slope, where grip matters more than looks. It also works well on patios when you want more space for the budget. Our Avon broom finish patio article makes the case for the simple finish.
