Stamped Concrete Patios & Driveways

A stamped concrete patio gives you the look of laid stone or brick with the strength of one continuous slab. There are no pavers to shift and no sand joints for weeds. Golden Paw Concrete pours and stamps custom patios, entries, pool surrounds and driveway borders for homeowners around Indianapolis. It's one of four finishes in our decorative concrete lineup, and it's usually where the conversation starts when someone wants a backyard that looks designed.

How Custom Stamped Concrete Gets Its Look

Stamping happens while the concrete is still soft. Once the slab is placed and floated, the crew lays textured mats across the surface and presses the pattern in, row by row. Timing matters. Too early and the mats sink. Too late and the texture won't take. Color usually goes on in two layers: a base color mixed into the concrete or worked into the surface, then a darker release color that settles into the joints and low spots so the pattern reads like real stone.

Common stamped concrete patterns include:

  • Ashlar slate: rectangular stones in mixed sizes, a classic patio look
  • Brick and cobblestone: running bond or herringbone, popular on walks and borders
  • Wood plank: boards with a grain texture, often where an old wood deck used to be
  • Flagstone and fieldstone: irregular shapes for a looser, natural feel

Pictures help more than words here. Our stamped patterns guide walks through popular pattern and color pairings, and your concrete specialist will talk through options at the in-person consultation.

Stamped Concrete Patio, Walkway and Driveway Projects

Patios get stamped more than anything else, since that's where people sit and look at the surface. A stamped concrete patio can run right up to the back door and wrap around a fire pit or seating area. Around a pool, texture and sealer matter more than pattern; our pool deck page covers that. Front entries get attention too. A stamped walkway or porch landing ties the house to the drive.

Driveways are a bigger surface and a bigger commitment. A fully stamped driveway makes a real statement. Many homeowners stamp only the borders or the apron, though, and leave the drive lanes with a plain broom texture where tires turn and stop.

Stamped vs. Colored, Broom and Exposed Aggregate

Here's how the four finishes compare. Price isn't in the table because it depends on the size and layout of your job; that part comes with your written estimate.

FinishLookTractionUpkeepBest For
StampedA pattern pressed in to look like stone, brick, slate or wood, usually in two tonesModerate; a glossy sealer can make it slick when wetHighest of the four: needs resealing every few years to keep color and texturePatios, front entries, driveway borders
Colored & stainedSolid or mottled earth tones in place of plain gray, smooth or texturedMatches the texture under the colorModerate: a sealer holds the color and needs renewing now and thenPatios, walkways, borders, and paired with stamping
Broom finishPlain gray with fine brushed lines and crisp tooled edgesHigh, wet or dryLowest: sweep, rinse, and seal if you chooseDriveways, sidewalks, steps, garage aprons
Exposed aggregateNatural stones showing across the surface, from tan to gray to brownHigh; the stone texture grips wellLow to moderate: periodic sealing keeps stones bright and tightDriveways, pool decks, patios, walks

Stamping almost always involves color, so it overlaps with colored and stained concrete. For a simple surface with strong grip, broom finish is the workhorse. If you love natural stone and want the real thing instead of an imprint, look at exposed aggregate.

Caring for Stamped Concrete Through Indiana Winters

Sealer does a lot of the work on stamped concrete. It deepens the color, sheds water and slows wear from shoes, grills and sun. As general guidance, stamped surfaces are sealed after the concrete cures and resealed every few years, sooner on a busy patio. Glossy sealers can get slick when wet. An anti-slip additive mixed into the sealer helps on steps and around pools.

Salt is the bigger threat. De-icing salt soaks into the surface, freezes and thaws with it, and can pop the colored top layer right off. That kind of damage isn't covered by our 3-year workmanship warranty, which covers problems caused by work done incorrectly. Shovel early, use sand for traction and keep salty slush from the driveway off a stamped walk. Our stamped patio care guide covers winter care in more detail.

Questions & Answers

Stamped Concrete FAQs

Have another question? Visit our FAQ page or call or text (317) 672-0966.

How does stamped concrete compare with a plain broom finish?

Broom finish is a single texture brushed into fresh concrete. Stamping adds mats, color layers, extra labor and a sealer, so it costs more and asks for more upkeep. In return you get a surface that looks like stone or brick. Our concrete cost guide explains what drives the cost of each.

How long does a stamped patio last?

Underneath the pattern it's still a concrete slab, so the structure holds up like any well-built patio. The color and sealer are what weather, which is why resealing matters. Our 3-year workmanship warranty covers problems caused by our workmanship.

How often does stamped concrete need resealing?

As a rule of thumb, every few years. Watch for water that no longer beads on the surface or color that looks chalky and faded. Patios in full sun and driveway borders usually need it sooner than shaded areas.

Can stamped concrete go on a driveway?

Yes. Some homeowners stamp the whole drive; many stamp just the border or the apron. A stamped driveway needs regular sealing and should never see de-icing salt, so plan for that upkeep. Ask about it when you request a free estimate.
