Concrete Retaining Wall Installation

A sloped yard can wash soil onto your patio, eat away at a driveway edge and turn half the lot into a hill nobody uses. A concrete retaining wall holds that soil in place and gives you flat ground to work with. Golden Paw Concrete is one of the retaining wall contractors in Indianapolis who plans the wall, the drainage behind it and the patio or steps beside it as one project. Retaining walls are part of our full lineup of concrete services.

Concrete Retaining Wall Projects We Take On

Retaining Wall Installation

New walls that level a sloped yard or hold back a bank of soil.

Walls Beside Patios

Low walls that frame a patio cut into a slope and keep dirt off the slab.

Driveway and Walkway Edges

Walls along a drive or path where the ground drops away or rises sharply.

Walls With Steps

Steps built through or beside a wall so you can move from one level to the next.

Retaining Wall Repair

A look at walls that lean, crack or leak muddy water at the base, and an honest call on repair or rebuild.

Many wall projects start because a homeowner wants a flat spot for a patio on a sloped lot. If that's you, our concrete patios page covers the slab side. We'd rather plan both at once than come back later and work around a finished wall.

Durable Walls Start With Drainage

Water is what knocks most retaining walls over. After a soaking rain, wet soil behind a wall gets heavy and pushes hard. Indianapolis clay holds water longer than sandy soil, and in winter that trapped water freezes and expands. A wall with nowhere for water to go is fighting that pressure every season.

So drainage gets planned before construction starts. As general practice, retaining walls need a path for water behind them, such as free-draining stone, a drain line or openings near the base. The drainage plan for your wall goes into the written scope, so you can see it before you sign. Our guide to drainage and grading explains why slope and runoff matter for any concrete.

Retaining Wall Builders Who Plan Before They Dig

A short garden wall and a wall that holds up a driveway are very different jobs. Taller walls, and walls that support a driveway, a building or a steep bank, may need an engineered design and a permit. Rules vary by city and county. We talk through height, loads and permits at the consultation, and if your project needs a permit, we apply for it.

We also look at what's around the wall. Tree roots, downspouts, fences and property lines all affect where a wall can go and how it drains. That's why the consultation happens in person, on your slope, not over the phone.

Our residential concrete page shows what else we pour around the house. Community associations can bring us slopes along common areas and entrances too; see our HOA concrete page.

Finish Options for Walls and the Spaces Around Them

A retaining wall is often the backdrop for a patio or a walk, so it helps to plan the look together. Colored concrete can tie a wall to the slab beside it. If the patio in front of the wall is stamped concrete, we'll talk about how the wall and patio colors work side by side.

Questions & Answers

Retaining Wall FAQs

Have another question? Visit our FAQ page or call or text (317) 672-0966.

When do I need a retaining wall?

Common signs are soil washing onto a patio or driveway, a slope too steep to mow, or a grade change you want to turn into flat, usable space. Sometimes regrading alone solves the problem, and we'll tell you if that's the case.

Do tall retaining walls need an engineer?

They may. Taller walls and walls that hold up a driveway, a structure or a steep bank may need an engineered design, and the requirements vary by city and county. We discuss height and loads at the consultation and apply for any permit the wall needs.

Why does drainage behind the wall matter?

Wet soil is heavy, and water that freezes behind a wall expands. Without a way for water to escape, that pressure can crack, lean or push over a wall. Drainage is part of every wall scope we write.

What finishes are available for a concrete wall?

Finish choices depend on the wall's design and where it sits. Many homeowners pick a color that ties the wall to a nearby patio or walk. We go over the options at the consultation, and our decorative concrete page shows the finishes we offer.

Can you build steps into a retaining wall?

Yes. Steps through or beside a wall make a sloped yard easy to use, and planning them with the wall keeps the joints clean. Our concrete steps page covers step design.
