A concrete pool deck has a tougher job than any patio. It’s wet most of the summer, it’s walked on barefoot and it sits in full sun on the hottest afternoons in Indianapolis. The finish decides how it grips and how hot it gets. This post compares the main options from the point of view of a wet, bare foot. For the deck build itself, see our pool deck service page.
Two things, mostly. Grip first: a surface with enough texture that a running kid or a dripping adult doesn’t slide. Comfort second: texture that doesn’t scrape toes, and a surface that doesn’t scorch in July.
Those two goals pull in slightly different directions. More texture means more grip but can mean rougher feet. The right finish balances them for how your family uses the pool.
Think about who swims. A deck that mostly hosts adults with sandals can carry a bolder texture. A deck where grandkids sprint from the gate to the diving board needs grip everywhere and a surface that’s gentle on knees and palms when someone does go down.
A broom finish leaves fine ridges across the surface. For pool decks, a lighter broom is common, giving grip without a sandpaper feel. It is the most budget-friendly option and the easiest to live with: no pattern to reseal and little to wear away. The look is plain, which many owners like next to bright water and planters.
The stroke direction matters on a pool deck. Running the texture across the main walking paths, and across any slope toward drains, gives feet the most bite. A smooth troweled band along the edges frames the deck and gives it a finished look.
Exposed aggregate reveals the stones in the mix, and it is one of the grippiest pool deck finishes. Stone size is the key choice. Small, rounded stones feel like a smooth pebble beach. Large or angular stones feel rough under bare feet. Ask to see the specific stone before you commit. A sealer helps keep the stones in place, and pool chemicals and splash-out make regular sealing worth the effort.
Stamped concrete gives a deck the look of slate, flagstone or travertine-style tile. Patterns with real texture grip better than smooth ones. The sealer matters most here. Glossy sealers look great dry and get slick wet, so pool decks call for a sealer with a slip-resistant additive and a lower sheen. Plan on resealing as part of normal care, since sun, chlorine and salt water all wear on it.
An Indianapolis pool deck spends half the year under snow and freeze-thaw cycles, then the other half soaking up splash-out. Chlorinated water and salt-water pool spray both work at concrete surfaces over time, and de-icing salt tracked across the deck in winter makes it worse. A sealed surface resists all of that better than bare concrete. Keep rock salt off the deck entirely and rinse it now and then during swim season. Damage from salt applied after the job isn’t covered by the 3-year workmanship warranty, which covers problems caused by work done incorrectly.
Color affects temperature more than finish does. Dark charcoals and deep browns absorb sun and can get uncomfortably hot by midafternoon. Light tans, creams and soft grays reflect more heat and stay noticeably cooler underfoot. If you love a darker look, use it for a border or a shaded seating area and keep the main walking path light. Integral color or stain from our colored concrete options can warm up a light base without pushing it dark.
Shade helps too. An umbrella zone or a pergola at one end gives everyone a cool place to stand. Our guide to choosing a concrete finish covers how color works with each texture.
