Exposed Aggregate Patios in Zionsville, IN: Texture, Traction, and Upkeep

An exposed aggregate patio has a look you can feel: rounded stones sitting just proud of the surface, warm in the sun and textured under your feet. It suits Zionsville homes well, from the older streets near the brick Main Street village to newer neighborhoods farther out. This post covers how the finish looks, how it grips and what upkeep it asks of you. For the finish itself and where else it works, see our exposed aggregate concrete page.

What an Exposed Aggregate Patio Looks Like

Every concrete mix contains stone. Normally it hides under a thin layer of cement paste. For exposed aggregate, the finisher removes that top layer at just the right moment in the set, usually by washing and brushing, so the tops of the stones show.

The stone does most of the design work. Smaller, rounded pea-gravel stones give a fine, even texture. Larger stones look bolder and rougher. Colors run from tan and cream to gray, rust and near black, depending on what goes into the mix. Integral color in the concrete around the stones can warm or cool the overall look.

A smooth troweled border is a popular frame. It gives chair legs a flat landing and makes the pebble field look deliberate.

Grip Underfoot

Traction is one of the best reasons to pick this finish. The stones give shoes something to catch, even when the patio is wet. That’s handy on a slab outside a back door, next to a hot tub or anywhere a sprinkler hits.

Bare feet are a slightly different story. Larger, sharper stones can feel rough, so if the kids will run across it barefoot all summer, ask about a smaller, rounder stone. The texture also hides leaves, dirt and grill splatter better than a smooth gray slab, which is one reason people like it on busy patios. Dropped toys and patio chairs scuff it less visibly, too.

How the Finish Handles Winter

Exposed aggregate holds up well in freeze-thaw weather when it is placed correctly and cared for. The weak spot is the bond between stone and paste. Water that sits in the surface, freezes and expands can work at that bond over time. So can de-icing salt. Keep rock salt off the patio and shovel with a plastic blade. Our guide to de-icing salt explains which products are hardest on concrete.

Sealing and Seasonal Upkeep

Sealing is the main maintenance step for this finish. A good sealer helps lock the stones in, keeps water and salt out of the surface and can deepen the stone color. As general guidance, many homeowners reseal every two to three years, sooner on a sunny or heavily used patio. Water that no longer beads on the surface is a sign it’s time.

  • Spring: sweep, rinse and check for loose stones or dull, chalky spots.
  • Summer: clean up grease and food spills quickly. Stone hides stains, but oil soaks in.
  • Fall: clear leaves so they don’t sit wet on the surface and stain it.
  • Winter: plastic shovel, no rock salt, and sand for traction if you need it.

Choose a sealer made for exposed aggregate. A high-gloss product can make the surface slippery when wet, which undoes part of the point. If a stone or two does pop loose over the years, it is usually a small fix rather than a sign the patio is failing.

A small amount of upkeep goes a long way here. Patios that are swept, rinsed and resealed on time tend to keep their stone color and texture for many seasons.

Is It Right for Your Yard?

Exposed aggregate is a strong fit if you want texture and grip with a natural look, and you’re fine with a sealing routine. If you’d rather never think about sealer, a broom finish may suit you better. If you want the look of cut stone, stamped concrete is the closer match. Our guide to choosing a concrete finish lays all four side by side, and our concrete patios page covers the rest of the project, from layout to pour day.
