Concrete Driveway Replacement in Indianapolis: Signs It’s Time and What to Expect

Concrete Driveway Replacement in Indianapolis: Signs It’s Time and What to Expect

A concrete driveway replacement is a bigger project than most people picture, but it’s also one of the most predictable. The old slab comes out, the ground gets fixed and a new driveway goes in. This post covers the signs it’s time in Indianapolis and what happens from tear-out to cure, so you know what you’re signing up for. If you’re still weighing a fix against a full tear-out, start with our repair or replace guide.

Signs Your Driveway Needs Replacing

Indianapolis driveways take a beating from freeze-thaw cycles, clay soil that swells when wet and road salt carried in from the street. Over the years that shows up as:

  • Cracks wide enough to catch a heel, especially where one side has dropped
  • Panels that rock, sink or tilt toward the garage
  • Large patches of flaking, pitted or scaling surface
  • Water pooling on the slab or running toward the foundation
  • A broken apron at the street or garage that gets worse every spring

One of these in a small area may be a repair. Several spread across the driveway usually means the base underneath has failed, and patching the top won’t change that.

Consultation and a Written Scope

Every replacement starts with an in-person consultation. We measure, check the slope and drainage, look at the apron and any walks that tie in, and talk through finish and width. If you’ve wanted a wider driveway or a parking pad, now is the time to say so. You then get a written, itemized estimate to review and approve, and if you’d like to spread out payments, your concrete specialist walks you through financing.

Once you approve, a 50% deposit holds your spot, Golden Paw applies for any permits the job needs, and the work goes on the schedule. Our pour season runs March through November, so winter is a good time to plan and book.

Tear-Out and Base Prep

Tear-out day is loud and quick. The crew breaks up the old slab, loads the pieces and hauls them away. Our removal and replacement page covers that half of the job in more detail.

Then comes the part most people never see: the ground underneath. Soft spots get dug out, the sub-base is regraded and compacted, and the slope is set so water runs away from the garage and the house. Forms go up along the edges to set the final shape and height. This is where a replacement earns its keep. A new slab poured on the same failed base would crack the same way.

Pour Day and Finishing

On pour day the concrete arrives by truck and gets placed, leveled and finished while it’s still workable. Most driveways get a broom finish for traction, though stamped, colored and exposed aggregate surfaces are options too. Control joints are cut or tooled in so the normal shrinkage cracks follow straight lines instead of wandering across the slab. Our concrete driveways page covers finish and design choices.

Will the new driveway crack? Some cracking is normal in any concrete, which is exactly why the joints are there. The goal is hairline cracks that stay tight and sit in the joints, not wide cracks that wander across the slab with one side dropping.

Cure Time: When You Can Drive on It

New concrete keeps gaining strength for weeks. As general guidance, most new driveways handle foot traffic after a day or two and a car after about a week. Heavier vehicles, like a moving truck or an RV, should wait longer. Keep the slab from drying out unevenly in hot weather, and skip de-icing salt the first winter. Our guide to caring for new concrete has the full list.

When the job is done, we walk the driveway with you to make sure you’re happy. The remaining 50% is due at completion, and the work carries our 3-year workmanship warranty.

What Drives the Cost of Concrete Driveway Replacement

Every driveway is different. Size is the biggest factor, followed by thickness, how much old concrete has to come out, access for the trucks, any base repairs and the finish you choose. Our concrete cost guide explains how those pieces add up.
