A cracked, sunken pool deck rarely fails all at once. It gets a little worse every winter until one spring it looks too rough to ignore. When that happens, timing becomes the real question. Pool deck replacement means tearing out the old slab, preparing the base and pouring new concrete, and none of that happens while people are swimming. This post covers how Plainfield homeowners can plan the work around swim season. For the service itself, see our concrete pool deck page.
Signs Your Pool Deck Is Due
- Cracks wide enough to catch a toe, or slabs that have shifted up or down at the joints.
- Sections that have sunk and now hold puddles or slope toward the pool.
- Flaking, pitted or rough spots that scrape bare feet.
- A gap opening up between the deck and the pool edge.
One small crack can sometimes be repaired. Widespread settling, heaving or surface damage usually means replacement is the better long-term fix. Our repair or replace guide explains how to tell the difference. On an older deck, there’s also the question of looks: patches rarely match, and a deck that’s half patch reads as worn out.
Timing Pool Deck Replacement Around Swim Season
Golden Paw pours concrete March through November. That window gives Plainfield pool owners three realistic options.
Early Spring, Before Opening
Many owners like replacing the deck before the cover comes off. Done early, the work can be finished before the pool is ready to use. Indiana springs are wet and unpredictable, though, so the weather has the final say on pour days. The new concrete also needs time to cure before heavy furniture and full traffic go back on it.
Fall, After Closing
Fall is the other natural window. The pool is closed, the yard is quieter and the deck has the off-season to settle in. Later in the year, cooler temperatures matter for curing. Our guide to the best time to pour concrete in Indiana explains why.
Midsummer
It can be done, but you give up swim days in the best weeks of the year. Most owners only choose it when the deck has become unsafe. If that’s where you are, it’s still better than another season of stubbed toes and trip hazards around the water.
What Happens at the Coping
Coping is the cap along the pool’s edge. It is where the deck and the pool meet, and it is the detail that needs the most care in a replacement. Tearing out concrete next to it has to be done without damaging the pool structure. The new deck also needs a proper joint where it meets the coping, so the deck can move with the seasons without pushing on the pool. We’ll look at the coping during your consultation and talk through whether your pool company should be part of the plan.
Drainage Around the Pool
A new deck is the chance to fix water problems for good. The surface should fall away from the pool so rain, splash-out and hose water don’t drain back into it carrying dirt and fertilizer. Water should also run away from the house. If the old deck held puddles, a fresh base and new slope can solve it. Deck drains are sometimes part of the answer on larger decks.
Think about the equipment, too. Pool pumps, filters and heaters often sit on their own small pad, with plumbing running under the deck. Mark where lines run before tear-out, and decide whether the equipment pad should be redone at the same time. Doing it all in one project keeps the concrete consistent and saves a second round of disruption.
Planning in the Off-Season
The easiest way to protect your swim season is to plan in winter. Estimates and consultations happen any time of year. That leaves room to compare finishes, choose a slip-resistant surface and get on the schedule before spring fills up. If you’d like to spread the cost out, our financing options are covered at your estimate.
